I came across this Harvard Review Article on Google's embrace of professional management a decade ago, which claims that in 2013 there were 5,000 managers, 1,000 directors, and 100 vice presidents (out of 37,000 employees). Does anybody have a rough sense of how many people sit in these role today in the company? I saw estimates for about 30,000 managers (pre-layoffs last year), but would love confirmation and estimates for directors and VPs. thx
There’s probably some organizational theory math formula out there for this kind of thing right?
Like given a certain size company one can assume number of direct reports per mgr, number of mgrs per Director, etc. I think Google is known to run pretty flat compared to other types of organizations but those numbers sound about right. I would imagine there are varying titles like junior, senior and maybe principal Manager/Director/VP too.
Edit to add: is this like an interview question like how many manhole covers are in Seattle type of thing?
Hi there, yes there is some typical ratio but I'm curious to see whether it's gone out of whack as the company grew and became more bureaucratic. So it's a real question. (I just realized I posted in the wrong place, but thanks for weigh in)
