Imagine being 41 and getting off by defacing public property with an ugly signature

Seems like mostly private property, but yeah.

He was tagging the sidewalk and public murals, so seems like he wasn't make some sort of anti-capitalist statement.

You're telling me you've got better ideas?

Imagine a city spending that much money because some paint irks them so much, in the midst of homeless, mental health, housing, crime, and other crises. Fuck if we're gonna spend that money to help people, our buildings and sidewalks gotta stay purty

IIRC, graffiti is a type of blight that contributes to scoring on which properties or areas are more likely to suffer from increased crime.

Communities can use a Blight Index to understand where to put their efforts.

There are many sources on this concept and examples of its use today. This search returns a few. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pieces%20of%20blight%2...

Side note: I thought no one (except tourists) used "San Fran"? I certainly cringe when I hear it.

I know at least the Thai community calls it San Fran. For example, the "San Fran Dhammaram Temple" https://maps.google.com/?cid=6890710206950349018&entry=gps

The actual article title spells out Francisco, as God intended.

Woohoo for authentic Christian colonialism?

At least the Spanish integrated local folk beliefs into Catholicism instead of erasing them and calling out those beliefs as sacrilege and satanic to enforce compliance with the empire. I'm glad that I grew up with siestas and not a Calvinist work ethic that permeates and persists in today's hustle culture.

Christianity as a whole has tons of Pagan traditions carried forward, so I wouldn't give the Spanish that much credit. If you want foreign people to adopt your religion you incorporate their practices into yours.

Ah yes, we must consider the native Frans. What are you on about?

That caring how the city's name is spoken/written is just a dog whistle for people who want to be exclusive to feel special. It's not like they're trying to get the name right because they really care about the saints. They just want to feel like they belong more than others, because it makes them feel like they have a stronger identity. But it's just a word for a place; we all get what 'San Fran' means. Getting uppity about is just performative insecurity, like grammar nazis.

I use it. Others seem to say "the city" as an alternative.

I live in the Bay Area and hear it without cringing. However "Frisco" does make me crings.

Frisco has been said for a long time by black San Franciscans (of which there are currently so few there is literally a movie called the last black man in San Francisco). Cringe if you want but there is history behind calling SF Frisco in certain communities.

"Frisco" is actually an old school blue-collar nickname for SF. My uncle and all his boomer stevedore buddies use it on the reg.

I wish they'd catch the people who are covering Edinburgh's old town in graffiti. This really only started here after lock down. It's horrible.

Also it seems a bit stupid to use one tag everywhere given what happens if you get caught in the act
