The Basic Internet Fanzine (1995) (petesqbsite.com)

I'm not entirely sure why my work is here or if will stay here very long, but I was tipped off about it so thought I could provide some context! :-)

I run a company that publishes a wide variety of newsletters like Ruby Weekly and JavaScript Weekly (both now ten years old) to almost 500k subscribers now, and in a discussion on Twitter the other day mentioned I started a popular BASIC 'fanzine' on Usenet in the mid 90s which I guess was sorta the newsletter of its day. OP has linked to the first issue of that fanzine. Looking back, I feel very privileged I eventually spun out a childhood interest into my day job 20 years later!

Thanks for keeping this site online, I used it back in high school to learn QB, well past the glory days of QB (~2005). I'm sure there's plenty of people stumbling into QB to this day and using the resources there.

Also, that's super cool about doing newsletters on programming still!

Oh, it's confusing, but I'm not the Pete of Pete's QB fame, I just happened to be another Pete/Peter who did a lot in the QBasic space :-) I didn't even know these fanzines were being archived there until a few years ago, so I hold him in similarly high esteem!

The Pete of Pete's QB site is Pete Berg, I believe: https://twitter.com/bandergrove/status/992130011413889025

Haha that's pretty funny.

I am ecstatic to see Pete's QB Site on HN, it was both a large part of my childhood and responsible for my introduction to programming. Lots of very fond memories there, along with Ted Felix's QBASIC programming tutorial[0].

Pete's site is a fantastic resource and you can easily lose hours perusing everything that is archived there.

If we're doing old 90s programming resources that we have fond memories of, does anyone else remember x2ftp.oulu.fi and their /pub/msdos/programming folder? Full of gold and a frequent haunt for me :-) It seems to have been archived too: http://ftp.lanet.lv/ftp/mirror/x2ftp/msdos/programming/

The PC Game Programmer's Encyclopedia (PCGPE) was something I used to read and update religiously at the time, and there was a similar archive of BASIC-specific stuff whose name I forget now..

If you're referring to the language, you really should use all-uppercase BASIC, otherwise people might get confused: a basic fanzine - huh?
