Is there a real-world workload that would need 1.5TB of RAM?

Well there is a Rack Based Mac Pro, I think may be there are some niche use case in server scenario. ( Running Multiple VMs )

I'm sure redis would find a way to use it

I want to speak to the person who is running redis directly on top of macOS.

Stand up, reveal yourself. We promise no harm will come to you or your home directory.

Jokes on you, we have a Users directory.

Probably somebody at Yale!

You misspelled “Georgia Tech”, they’re just crazy enough to do it. :P

I was only half joking. Yale used to have a cluster with Xserve machines.

MacOS build/test servers, potentially- but I'm not sure that would be a useful CPU to memory ratio.

It may just be that that happens to be a valid combination of memory slots and memory density available on the market.

Of course! That's pretty much the point of supercomputing.

No supercomputer in the TOP500 runs macOS (or any OS other than Linux, since a couple of years ago).

RAM is used as a disk cache. RAM-drive can also be useful.
