Two solutions: 1) Be a speaker, and 2) Go to BarCamps and Unconferences instead. I've been to a number of free BarCamps which have competed extremely well with expensive events in terms of both networking and quality of talks.

Thanks, I'll look into the BarCamps once again, had kinda forgotten about them. The selection in Switzerland is not that big.

I've started speaking at smaller Open Source conferences this year, and hope to expand that. It's a great experience.
