A bit off-topic, but I couldn't find this and was very curious: What font are the slides using in the code snippets? It looks very clean--I didn't realize it was monospace at first.

It is Monofur: http://www.dafont.com/monofur.font, IMO it looks better on slides in small doses than in an editor all day long.

+1. Would love to know the name of that font.

And also, what's the main font used for all the text? It's a lovely serif

Looks like Ubuntu Mono.

In general, I agree that Helvetica looks much prettier on a Mac than on Windows (one of the main reasons I despise seeing font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; on pages). Some other fonts don't look too bad on Windows, though.

I don't know much about font rendering; this is just what I've noticed. For what it's worth, some screenshots of the same text with font-family set to Helvetica [0], Myriad Pro, and Segoe UI on Windows 7, Firefox.

Helvetica(/Arial): http://snag.gy/Jneor.jpg Myriad Pro: http://snag.gy/f2IJx.jpg Segoe UI: http://snag.gy/ujvpX.jpg

[0] This actually defaults to Arial, I believe, because afaik Helvetica is not bundled with Windows. (Is there no way to use asterisks on HN?)

I agree that in the long run it would be better for users; yet as a user, I'm used to clicking on the Okay button on the left. Every time I see one isolated application with the Okay button on the right, I'm going to have a slower/harder time knowing which button I need to press.

If one of your users uses 50 applications, and he uses yours once in a week, he's going to be annoyed at your application for being different; even if that "different" is supposedly better, reflexes have taught the user to scan the buttons in a certain way.

I'm not suggesting that the order we have now is better; but until one of the OSs or an application like Facebook moves to the "better" button order, I can't see why a designer might do so for his own application.

Android changed the order of positive/negative buttons in dialogs with 4.0 and it took me ages to get used to the new order. Just stick with the platform default, please: it's what users expect.

I agree, platform consistency is more better for your app than following something which is theoretically better. I'd be reticent to change the Ok -> Cancel order without some harder evidence than this.

"More better"? Jesus I should proof a bit...

couldn't agree more ;)

Dunno about others, but this is what I see: http://i.snag.gy/LPiss.jpg. I assume the author was using a "trusted PC," which he had previously verified.

What's really annoying about Hotmail passwords is the 16 character limit.

Edit: This is what Hotmail says about verifying a "trusted PC."

"To use this feature, you must access your account using Internet Explorer and have Windows Live Essentials installed."

Some of the newer PCs aren't too bad with this. My desktop sucks with sleep, but the two laptops I use are pretty flawless (though one's battery is terrible). I haven't shut one down in 3 weeks, and the other in a week. They're pretty standard, too; the good battery life one was around $600.

Haven't used a Macbook, though, so can't compare.

Just curious, have you worked at Microsoft before? (Serious question; I'm not trying to discount your opinion either way)

No, but a lot of my friends went to work for them straight out of school. A couple still do, and they are happy.

I also just hired someone who worked there for 2 years. So I have some perspective from both sides, but not as an insider.

Any tips on applying as an intern? Are the online applications a decent route? Sorry; not entire on topic, but I've wanted to intern there for years.

I can't say what the best way to apply is, but if you send me your email (see profile) and optionally a link or description of what you've done/what you are interested in, I'd be happy to pass it on to a recruiter.

Ah, cool. Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, and send you an email sometime. I'd like to work on some small projects, take a few more classes, learn some new things for a while before applying again. No point applying repeatedly without having added anything, heh. Thanks for the reference, though; I'll be sure to annoy you sometime this year with an email.

Recruiters don't come to my university (that I know of), so I applied on their recruiting website (http://careers.microsoft.com/careers/en/us/tech-internships....) and got a position as an SDET. I actually just finished last Friday and have to agree with AdamTReineke, the experience started great and only got better.

Does Microsoft come to your school's career fair? If so, find out who the recruiter assigned to your school is and e-mail them. Your academic adviser might have this info or you could probably get it from a previous intern from your school. I don't know how the online applications work, I assume I applied online, but after doing a couple dozen applications, it all blended together.

Go ahead and apply online. My recruiter told me she actually literally reads every resume that gets submitted (..submitted to her schools, of course). She doesn't use any sort of software filter.

Mentioned this above somewhere, but thought I'd leave it here, too. Try Console. http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/

It makes working in Windows much, much nicer.

If you could do that well, that would be amazing. There was a post years ago from a Mozilla intern on "Lifestream." It's a little bit like your idea, but I've wanted this for so long. Still haven't figured out how to do this, so I shall wait to see how yours turns out instead.

Take a look: http://weizhou.wordpress.com/2008/07/07/prototype/

I personally think some of the ideas there are amazing. I attempted to contact the intern on whether there was any work still being done in this area, but received no response. I really hope someone can create a browser extension, or perhaps that Mozilla might still consider implementing this.

I currently have an obsessively organized library of bookmarks, which still fails me at times.

Edit: Is there any way to organize bookmarks within folders on your website? I see it is not possible in the bookmarklet.

You can tag things, which hopefully serves the same purpose as foldering. I'll add some tools in the future to rename batch tags.
