And there are over 170 countries... Also, when it comes to smartphones it's the western world and particularly US mkt. is what counts. If your product rocks in this mkt. then you have a chance. Look at Samsung how badly they need US mkt.

Only people in the US think the US is the market that counts. You need to open your eyes and realize there is a world full of people making money in and outside the US.

Think how your argument would apply to Xiaomi. They are absolutely killing it in China (I'm assuming they aren't in the US market), but one day they are going to turn their attention to the US and quite possibly dominate, like they have in China.

Also, don't forget, there was a time when Android was the 2nd platform to Apple in the US.

Liked it. Very intelligent way to utilize the spare bandwidth. One thing everyone forgets is that we are actually paying for the full-month bandwidth from Cable companies so they shouldn't worry if I use it 24 x 7 x 30 OR my neighbor. As long as there is mechanism to give priority to the owner when he demands the full bandwidth.

An excellent move by Amazon. This is something I've been waiting for. I hope it becomes a reality though...

Buy a Slingbox, you don't need to wait. You can stream live TV to all your devices today. The one I bought in 2005 is currently sitting in my father's house, so that he can watch his home TV from the back office of his store when there are no customers.

> SlingPlayer is not available for Linux, BSD or other open source systems

Polling the HN hivemind: what are the best alternatives that do support Linux and BSD?

You can watch your Slingbox on the web on Linux, as that wiki page says in the Linux section. There's just no native app.

Thanks for the tip!

The last time I tried, the standard player didn't work because it depended on their OS-specific native libraries. It's good to know that there's an alternative now.

One thing we have to understand here is that 1 second of human brain activity is quite a lot of computing! It's not 'just one second'. This incredible experiment shows how the human curiosity has gone so far to build a artificial thinking machine. It would be great to see the compute result of if we could add 10 Supercomputer.

Google+ rant post is just amazing! Very interesting and way better than the Joyent co-founder article. I hope Google will launch its G+ API so that 3rd party developers can use it just like twitter and FB which will be a great reason consider using Google+ more seriously.

Too Long; But Read (i.e. TL;BR which is exactly opposite of standard TL;DR). I gotta admit this is an excellent read. If this was not from "Paul Graham" I would not have read even the half of it. One thing is for sure that, I don't care what media and others (haters) think. Paul has done so much for the tech start-up world. Just see the "Thanks" section at the bottom of the page and you will see the names of women entrepreneurs names and do a Google search on them and you will see their start-up venture. Some of them have been aqua-hired by notch firms. That's matters. Period.

So basically Apple still wins in terms of CASH whereas Samsung will have noticeable presence in the market with low profit. But then eventually few years later if this same trend continues provide Samsung still can survive on low profit, Samsung will have majority % share of consumers with their device which in turn will start adding profits. There only $7 Billion people on the planet who will Apple sell their iPhone if the Samsung (and others except Apple) captured most of them? Also, due to the high cost of smartphones and contract terms it's not easy to upgrade the device.

Why would Robert Scoble compare Apple’s iWatch & Google Glass together? These two things are totally different. One is smart watch where as other one is a wearable computer. I don't get it. Then he goes on giving everyone meaning Microsoft and Google fair chance of disrupting market with some if logic. And, finally he says there won’t be any truly new-new things in 2014 which will be just refinement rather than revolution. But, what about other tech companies beyond these three biggies? They have as good as chance of disrupting the market with some new innovation.

This Java thing is getting tiresome. It's feel like Microsoft's Windows software updates that we all are used to. Oh well, I am glad that I use Google Chromebook laptop which doesn't have Java and Windows OS (of course). One thing also good about Chromebook is that I don't any anti-virus software at all.

This will be an interesting battle to watch. Will Aereo prevail? Any prediction? You all have probably heard of a little trend going on called “cord cutting”? I watch streamed digital content via Netflix and Chromecast. I will NEVER go back to Cable or Satellite again. Too much restrictions on channel packages also long term commitment.
