This. I have had a Facebook account since the days of needing to be invited and yet I have posted a status update on the site less than 10 times. I barely even check on my newsfeed.

But there is hardly a messaging platform as ubiquitous as Facebook messenger. Not everyone uses it as their main messaging client but almost everyone has one. Having an active Facebook page and group has also done more for my online business than any ad marketing. And Facebook marketplace is like Craigslist but better in almost every way.

I don't care if people make a Facebook account or not but there is certainly value in one, even if you don't care about the "News Feed".

Not all blockchains are created equal. It is the proof of work algorithms that accompany most blockchains that are extremely energy hungry

Well that is orders of magnitude faster than I expected. Didn't they just get FCC approval?

Rumour is the satellites are mostly non-functional.

They are apparantly lacking 2 out of 4 antenna, and don't have the inter satellite laser links. Some might just be dumb mass simulators.

It would be very hard to turn that into any kind of commercial service.

I'd say it's more a test of the satellite deployment system and an attempt at removing risk from the remainder of the project.

Not just a rumour, it's mentioned in the article:

> This group of spacecraft will have no inter-satellite laser (optical) links, a feature that would transform an orbiting Starlink constellation into a vast mesh network. According to FCC filings, the first 75 satellites will be of the partial-prototype variety, followed soon after by the first spacecraft with a more or less finalized design and a full complement of hardware.

Yeah it would stink if they launched a bunch of high value communication satellites and found out that the station keeping didn't work =/

Not that I completely disagree with you, but lets not pretend that leaking SSN is equivalent to possibly leaking emails and passwords. One of those is far more important than the others. There was also tons of evidence of insider trading by Equifax execs. If anything the Equifax stuff proved to me that the American public doesn't care about privacy and so neither should investors.

Which one are you saying is more sensitive: my ssn or my email password?

Hilarious that the two replies to you are exact opposite answers, and neither is the original commentator

Email password, of course. I give out my ssn for identification to various organizations. I NEVER give out my email password to anyone except my email provider

Is that even a question? guess what is needed when you go apply for mortgage?

Are you getting against the market? Cause of not then you probably want it to keep going up.

It healthier that the market reflects reality. Boom and bust is a stress inducing net negative pattern for society.

ie MoviePass. As soon as a unprofitable company loses its investor backing it doesn't matter if they control the majority of the market, they are still doomed.

No different than airlines. You are only as profitable as your dumbest competitor- someone wise once said

I just bought a ton of outdoor gear and consistently found other websites such as Backcountry, Moosejaw and REI to be significantly cheaper. Was usually 2-3 day shipping which isn't much worse than Prime's 2 day.

Prime's 2-day shipping often took more than two days for me anyway. And there's nothing more than an apology "sorry, your package is taking longer than expected" when that happens.

10 years ago I certainly would have purchased Google Search, Google Maps, Chrome and Gmail. I currently pay for Android. Nowadays there are a lot more alternatives that have caught and surpassed some of these products. I have switched back to Firefox and am currently switching to ProtonMail but yes Google has made quite a few amazing products that for years had no competition.

I don't think Amazon would invest almost $1b into a company just to pressure Tesla. I know there are a lot of EV vaporware companies out there but I don't think Rivian is one of them.

I don't either, I was just throwing that out as a mental exercise. Who would benefit from devaluing Tesla and why?

I wonder what makes you think that about Rivian?

I think a lot of people forget that Rivian has the backing of Amazon and GM though. I am not saying that Rivian is a proven car company but I would give them a much higher chance at success than I would have given Tesla 9 years ago. I fully believe that Rivian will deliver and that Tesla will also deliver so I think the comparison between the two is valid.

Plenty of ventures back by big names end up dead. Even when Amazon or GM themselves execute a new product, it's no where near a guaranteed success...

Tesla has products and paying customers. Big difference.

You are right but Amazon has invested almost $1b into Rivian and Amazon has almost as much cash ($42b) as Tesla's market cap ($50b). With GM jumping in too these two companies combined could flex and crush Tesla. Not saying this will happen (I don't think it will) but it could.

Amazon no doubt wants in on the self driving electric vehicle market to compete with Tesla, Apple and Google and heavily investing in the best EV startup other than Tesla is the easiest way into this field. But because of this I would put Rivian as only slightly behind Tesla.

Now you are right, forcing your way into a field by throwing money at the problem doesn't always ensure success, just as Windows Phone. But as with Windows Phone it does usually ensure a decent product gets to market. And that is all I am saying will happen. The likelihood of a Rivian product getting to market is just as likely as a Model Y getting to market. Both extremely high.
