is it only me or there is a (just one) line of code gone wrong on ed's comment handling server?

Hey, thanks for wrecking page display for me! :)

it was just one line! :-)

Crowd-Sourced TSA patdown.

I might put it on a T-shirt this way: "Got root? $rm -rf / - make computer faster!" :-)

In big corporations the opposit might be true. Programming is outsourced and analysts are driving the decision-making (in the best case). The point with the programming skills stays, though. To me it seems there exists a whole corporate ecosystem with analysts who can't code and the managers around them who do not ask tough questions. It is even hard to get scored there if you can and want to code and generally to dig deeper, because it bothers them.

Another possibility would be to work for companies that have big data already.

That can be a chicken-and-egg problem, though, since many of them only want people who already know how to work with big data at some level.

Anything is better than not present gut feeling!

Freenet.Org

A technical solution to a social problem. Freenet & co rely on our right to private communication with whomever we choose and to run whatever software we want on the machines we own.

You cannot have Freenet on a locked-down box that only connects to registered sites (google Minitel for an example of such thing.) That's why it is essential not to rely solely on Freenet/Tor/Mute/whatever.

You can survive with no German knowledge if your coworkers target group predominantly speaks English. This is not a given, though.

If you have this Lesson learned you'd appreciate this followup.

1+99 = 100, 2+98=100 etc. So the sum of integers between 1 and 100 is 100*49 + 50. Is this what the author refers to? I believe he has misunderstood the point in that math problem.

I don't remember the derivation off the top of my head, but I suspect the article is referring to the derivation of the formula:

> S(1..n) = (n^2 + n) / 2

This was, if I recall, the very first example of inductive proofs we did at my university.
