Switching to Vim cured my RSI completely. I was thinking that coding might no longer be my occupation, but thanks to Vim I’m still working 10+ years later!

interestingly I was all-in on Vim when it was at its worst!

Maybe your keyboard was a contributing factor? I had wrist pain typing in vim on a "regular" (Keychron C1) Keyboard. The wrist pain is gone since i use a split keyboard (Ergodox EZ) which allows me to rotate both halves of the keyboard in order to match the "incoming angle" of my forearm which removes the need to constantly bend my wrists outwards.

As I was reading your comment I was thinking “this feels just like the time of Silicon Graphics and SUN”. Glad I got to experience that time in the valley, even though I started to feel the influx of people who were just there for the money, not the passion, starting around 2002/2003.

I was intrigued by how many of the 3000 cities you’ve cached I had heard of. You used population size >100k as cutoff, it would be interesting to compare how many cities someone has heard of with their population size.

This would be a fun metric to rate someone’s “global orientation”.

Only recognize the cities with >1M people? Low GO score (or more charitably, high Local Focus score :-)

There are many quizzes like that on Sporcle.

If the bank rejects your loan application they will be able, when challenged, to say “you were rejected by this particular model, trained on this particular data which was filtered for bias in this particular way”.

Similarly the tax authorities will be able to say why they chose to audit you.

The university will be able to say why you were or weren’t admitted.

The other bit I found shocking:

We’ve had over a decade to prove that AAA games are not viable in a business sense. The budgets and returns are not sustainable. However, to get these massive budgets off the ground, the industry effectively eliminated mid-tier games.

We had to make do with Shape Tables in AppleSoft BASIC…good times drawing those out manually on graph paper. And then XOR-ing them onto the background. Amazing how good games were on the Apple ][ without dedicated graphics hardware.

Wait, what? Apple is bad because they don’t provide a way for you to pirate content they sell?

Loved the article, thank you for sharing. How happy are the grandparents with the hearing aid functionality? Is it working well for them and how is the battery life?

It's all too early to tell, but we'll know after a week or so. The battery life thing is not seeming like a big problem, since the existing device needs batteries changed every few days or charged every night.

As for the sound quality, a few of our grandparents have tried it, and while they say it sounds 'different', it's not necessarily bad. Grandma was actually quite content even with just the old EQ settings that shipped pre iOS 18 for folks with hearing issues.

Thanks for the kind words!

The hearing test on one of the images shows a ‘profound loss’. Does the hearing aid feature work for such a significant loss, or does it disable for any result beyond moderate loss?

The feature only works when hearing loss is mild (26–40 dBHL) or moderate (41–60 dBHL). We had to repeat the test a few times to get it in the range and enable it.

Thanks. Any tips on how to do this while keeping the hearing profile as close to reality as possible?

I thought this was crazy, but it’s a thing apparently:
