Ask HN: University diploma/degree role in modern (2015+) IT career

Hello HN,

Today I wanted to ask you about education's role in career and job hunting.

I do realize that for an entry level candidate (e.g. a tech support engineer), the presence of a university degree is probably valuable (since they might not have any relevant field experience, hence entry level) and even might be a deciding factor.

However, if you've already gotten a job in a field that more or less suits you and is not far from your ultimate goal (your CV begins to fill up with years of experience in the field), do employers typically care about your degree (or its absence) at all? Maybe it varies with levels (BS vs Master's)?

Does it play any role at a later stages of career or does any meaningful experience (and other things like on-site tests and general impression) completely overshadow it? Do you think anything will change in the near future?

I also feel like there are some variables to this question that may change the answer significantly. A good answer will specify these:

Location: USA vs Europe vs Asia?
Ecosystem: Big companies vs Startups (small businesses)
  Occupation: Techie vs Manager
So help me out, HN. I'd love to hear about your experiences with this! Cheers!
