So a battery in a laptop will significantly deteriorate in the amount of charge it can hold over several years, to the point of being useless. How does this work for Tesla? Do their batteries die down gradually, and have to be replaced? What is the cost of replacement after this 8 year period?

They don't allow the batteries to be fully charged or discharged, to limit the type of wear you're referring to.
