I think the snail mail to email analogy is flawed... snail mail has an envelope, plain text email does not. However, a postcard does not generally have an envelope...

So here are some better analogies:

snail mail letter == encrypted email

snail mail postcard == plain text email

publicly posted diary == plain text gmail
