What about a kinect? They're capable, (relatively) cheap, and their ubiquity means that they have a good community.

Yes, but there won't be any
new
old Kinects, and the New Kinect requires entirely new reverse engineering and USB3, so it's not a drop-in replacement. My system uses Kinects, but we can't rely on them being available in the long run.
