One thing that gets overlooked in this debate is the survivor bias. STEM people have a pretty good way to drive down incomes in certain STEM occupations by automating them out of existence.

Potential income from building simple HTML Web sites nowadays is roughly zero, so people with those skills don't stay in the industry (and get counted in surveys) - they either upgrade their skills or move into other careers.
