Actually, I think it's fine for languages:

Backwards-Incompatible change? Increment Major version

Many new features, but (largely) backwards compatible? Increment Minor version.

Bugfixes? Increment Patch.

I think this also perfectly maps to Semantic Versioning (http://semver.org/)
