It does seem as though these companies are trying to signal something (a la cryptonomicon), by the repeated emphasis on direct. That's the part that is scary - as someone else pointed out, with the right SSL keys and a copy of the bytes flowing thru a limited number of NAP's, you don't need your grubby fingers in the google/facebook datacenters.
