Not necessarily. Just start conversations with a low impedance to join. That's why a common greeting is "Nice day, isn't it", instead of, "I was debugging some comonads in Haskell the other day".

But comonads are so much more fun!

I did just fine as a mathematician... then again, I spent most of my free time hanging out with the artists, because they had better parties.

Post graduation of course, it does help to be making double what your peers are making.
