Build up a portfolio of the kind of work you want to be doing.

You don't get a job in compilers by complaining. You do it by getting commit access to gcc.

Hop to it.

Alternately, do a startup in the space you want to be in and let VCs pay for the privilege of you educating yourself. Either way.




I was very lucky in the sense that I could participate in two Google Summer of Code programs. With some relevant experience, I'm now in a good position to get the exact kind of job I want (which also happens to be related to compilers / VMs).
