Principle 5 of the UK Data Protection Act says:

Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes.

It's not the same as a right to be forgotten, but it does say companies need to think about (and presumably be prepared to argue in court) their need for data.
