This depends entirely on how much the mortgage costs compared to the rent you'd otherwise be paying no? It is very much case by case depending on where you live and therefore completely wrong to state as a general rule?
In my area mortgages are far cheaper than rent, even if you account for 10% annual returns on your house deposit when renting, you would still come out far behind in the long term
