I wonder how they drilled a six foot long hole, and kept it on target. Some gigantic Roman bench drill?

That's delightfully bad. The archeologists are dressed somewhat like the nazis in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, except I think that the hat of the one on the left is trying to morph into a pith helmet. The wooden pipe is apparently a plastic log from an amusement park ride, and their job is carried out somehow by poking it with thick lengths of dowel. It looks like those also function as measuring sticks, when not being used for the poking procedure.
