I have xconsole running now, I have cron jobs that echo out stats to it every so often. It is a very nice and lite conky replacement.
And a few of these I still use, like xv, xload, xclock, xterm, xless, xmessage and xmahjongg. A few I never heard of.
It is too bad all these cool little tools will be gone for Linux once Wayland becomes a thing.
Yes I know wayland as a X emulation, but that will probably be removed once wayland is fully adopted.

I use it for the HP-41CX emulation, but it emulates a lot of HP calculators from that era...
Programs like these may seem simple today but they're often very fast, efficient and to the point.
What I once used at work was XScreenSaver, getting a lot of admiring views/comments from passers-by.
I used xwpe for a few years in the 90s.
xev is a cool tool for analyzing input events. A modern alternative is something like KWin Debug Console > Input Events.
