I think one thing the article neglects to mention is that by making a lot, you learn a lot. You might not learn things in a framework you can recite to sound small over dinner, but you learn practical things.
I think it's most pertinent for cooking. I know many people who can cook extremely well, but almost nobody could explain the chemistry of it.
