It is really bad advice because sometimes people just want to share something useful with you. If you do not positively acknowledge those people, you will miss out on information that could gravely affect your life. They will stop trusting you and stop sharing it. Meanwhile, you will keep fighting your own fires without learning some better ways. Serendipity is not a useless concept either.
