The only important things to know about an employee cannot be determined from an interview. I want to know will they actually do any work? Will they get anything done? Will they ask for help when stuck? Will they ask what to do next if it seems the backlog is empty?

Anyone can code. But lots of coders have so little productivity it's hard to be sure asking them to do so is worth it.
