Why do you think people don't already do that? In the end, all content in the top page started as a submission with zero upvotes.
I like the links on the new page and check out the new section from time to time, but in the end, I'm here for the discussion, seeing what other people think, and learning from the comments, so for me the new page isn't good as there is basically no comments there, no matter how great the links are on the new page.
Maybe, but I prefer a fast, consistent UI to quickly read about a topic and see if it is interesting. That is super fast here, but every site has a different comment section, so I have to a)look for it b) parse the different style c) parse whether all comments are just from spambot accounts
I would like to ask the HN community to consider visiting the "new" page on HN say at least daily, to give interesting new links a more fair chance of being noticed.
There’s already a formal system for this, called newreview. I don’t know whether they’re still taking applicants but you can email and ask if interested.
It’s tedious work. But it probably appeals to a certain personality type. You basically read each new post and mark your opinion of it.
It had to be formalized for exactly the reason you point out here: if it was left to random chance, the most interesting stories would (and did) fall through unnoticed. There’s a lot of interesting work that goes on behind the scenes to counteract such problems.
Not that I know of. It’s part of the second chance pool machinery. Or at least it was back in 2017 or so.
If you search Dan’s comments for "software sandwich" you’ll find https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10742610. I’m not sure if there are any other comments mentioning the system, or what became of it.
Suffice to say, it’s not possible to have an interesting front page every day unless there are reviewers whose job is to go looking for interesting stories. It’s too much of a schlep for anyone to want to do it otherwise.
Correct, newreview is specific to the second chance pool. I think it’s the main way that stories are found for it — a reviewer digs through newreview, and when enough reviewers agree a story is good, it’s accepted into the pool. That’s not the only way (you mention another), just the main way.
If you’re interested, I encourage you to email and ask if you can join. They’ve probably long filled the team that does it, but it’s always worth asking if you want to do some yeoman work. But one tip: it’s work, not fun, so if you do pursue it, be sure to go into it with that mindset.
To be honest, I doubt they need any help nowadays. The system has been working well for nearly a decade. But you never know till you try.
I like the hckrnews.com interface. Just chronological, with the newest at the top, but with comment counts and an indicator for which are new since your last visit.
just tried to add a twitter link to this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39688913 and it was marked by [dead]
on the other hand HN is an amazing community and if blocking links is what it takes—block it, but keep it awesome <3
