I recently ran into nice furniture for local traditional asian use that used finger jointed wood stock throughout - and looked perfectly nicely, carefully done and finished as one might expect. I was surprised but there it was. (I don't know if it was made in Japan). When used deliberately, even visible finger-jointed engineered wood stock can look perfectly fine in a carefully made item.
