The extinction of legacy Fortran codes (fortran-lang.discourse.group)

Other than Fortran, there are billion lines of code or more, of obsolete and extinct systems and languages, so many man-year of work and research, only a minimal part being preserved, for historical reason, and some being rewrited again and again in other forms, not every time in better form.. This is not a kind of resource wasting/pollution? Looking a the dimension of actual OS and mainstreams languages i have some doubts
