You are not alone. Typing matters, 'internal' is just too long. I'd much prefer if they for instance would reserve '.lan' for internal usage.

Isn’t it possible to setup a default search domain. So most places you could just type something like
https://site/
and your dns config knows to look for
https://site.internal/
