from the article:

Apple is unlikely to use OpenAI models to power any of its artificial intelligence features in iOS 18. Instead, what it’s doing here is testing its own AI models against ChatGPT.

For example, the SiriSummarization framework can do summarization using on-device models. Apple appears to be using its own AI models to power this framework, then internally comparing its results against the results of ChatGPT.

Well, I read that WAY too fast. "Apple appears to be using OpenAI’s ChatGPT API" and I was OFF to the races to leave a comment. Thanks for the catch

https://openai.com/policies/terms-of-use:

“What You Cannot Do.

You may not use our Services for any illegal, harmful, or abusive activity. For example, you may not:

[…]

- Use Output to develop models that compete with OpenAI.”

So, if this article is right, Apple negotiated a special deal with OpenAI. I expect that to be quite expensive.

>- Use Output to develop models that compete with OpenAI.”

But how will OpenAI know you are doing this?

>I expect that to be quite expensive.

Don't think Apple is short on cash to cheap out on stuff like this.
