Feels like OpenAI employees aren't so enthused about joining MSFT here, no?

It seems based on Satya's messaging its as much MSFT as Mojang (Minecraft creator) is MSFT... I guess they are trying to set it up with its own culture, etc

Feels like they want to be where Altman is.

Feels like they're not on board with taking the whole "non-profit, for the good of humanity" charter LITERALLY as the board seems to want to do now.

Make them look like hypocrites.

Being upset because the board hinders the company's mission, but threaten to join MS to kill the mission completely.

Or they believe the mission is going to die with how the board is performing, which is in fact the correct take.

The board isn't merely hindering the mission, that's downplaying the extraordinary incompetence of the remaining OpenAI board.

I get the OpenAI part, but why join MS?

A new company ok, but that kills the mission for sure.

That's like Obi Wan joining the Sith because Anakin didn't bring balance to the force.

This is a comically outdated take.

Realistically, regular employees have little to gain by staying at Open AI at this point. They would be taking a huge gamble, earn less money, and lose a lot of colleagues.

Why earning less money? Isn’t openai comp huge while MS is famous for peanuts?

Most of OpenAI comp is in equity… which is worth much less now

Sam starts a new company, they quit OpenAI to join, he fires them months later when the auto complete hype dies out. I don't understand this cult of personality.

just picturing you in the 80's waiting for the digital folder and filing cabinet hype to die out.

maybe chatgpt is overhyped a bit (maybe a lot).... most of that hype is external to OAI.

But to boil it down to autocomplete is just totally disingenuous.

> But to boil it down to autocomplete is just totally disingenuous.

It is though from Ilya's own words: "We weren't expecting that just finding the next word will lead to something intelligent; ChatGPT just finds the next token"

Ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI4Tpi48DlA

if you'd like to take a quote out of context in order to equate two different technologies, you just go to town.

Ilya says it's pretty clear that a very very smart autocomplete leads to intelligence.

OP was using the word autocomplete as a pejorative, but it's actually not and it is the strategy LLMs are pursuing.

The example that Ilya's was using: If you feed the LLMs a mystery murder novel and it is able to autocomplete "The killer is" from just clues, you have achieved intelligence.

Nothing wrong with autocomplete being AGI.

yeah, when I think of autocomplete I definitely think of predicting the next thing a person is going to type, which is related but basically equivalent to "a horse and a plane to both get to a destination, whats the difference" in my mind.

If you're going to speak so abstractly you really lose the forest for the trees IMO. I do like the murder mystery example

> "a horse and a plane to both get to a destination, whats the difference"

That's actually a good analogy with autocomplete. A plane reactor still measures itself in "horse"-power. It's technically a very very powerful horse. Trying to get better and better horses got us here. Like GPT-4 is a very very powerful GMail-like autocomplete. :)

The rumor has it that OpenAI 2.0 will get a LinkedIn "hands-off" style organization where they don't have to pay diversity taxes and other BS that the regular Microsoft org does

Diversity Taxes? Not aware of that on my paycheck. Maybe time to check out alternative sources of information than what you typically ingest.

I see you are new here or not aware of our diverse slates for every position we hire.

Well, except for Sam, he apparently didn't need a diverse slate.

With that they must know something was unjustly done to Altman, or that their stock option can only be saved with such move

Wow. That would be delicious for Microsoft...
