Facebook's first crime here was to incentivise the violation of net neutrality.



This is an important overlooked point. Several commenters are saying "social media just reflects human behavior." And we can get into lots of philosophical arguments about free speech, recommendations algorithms, UX patterns, etc. But a key piece here is that there was not a free market for social media or news apps; Facebook was subsidized by the major telecom company so it had a privileged position. A platform with privileged monopoly position should therefore be expected to bear greater responsibility. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
