Hollywood fatigue forebodes total collapse of the box office (globaltimes.cn)

For the most part, modern movies have just been dreadful. Previous great screenwriters like Shane Black would make action significant (with people actually reacting in fear to guns), make comedy light and airy but non-constant etc. (he has some nice lists of advice and processes he would use going through scripts) but then these weird light Marvel movies started coming out, amounting to little more than Abbott and Costello vs. the Wolfman or whatever. And somehow that took over all of Hollywood, so Shane Black goes and directs an Iron Man...

Thankfully old movies exist, so I've started digging further and further back, really enjoying the quality writing and acting in things like 1942's To be or not to be or 1932's Grand Hotel. The 80s are also a great treasure trove - recently I saw Shane Black's Last Action Hero, which is way before its time. Or Mystery Men - satirizing these same superhero movies before they became ever present.

I was in my young 20s when Last Action Hero came out. It was well marketed and they hooked up with some fast food chain. ai think you could get Last Action Hero glasses at the chain. It was a huge flop. I never did see it. I’ll have to watch it now.

I find the theatre experience to be meh. Too $$ for food, can't pause the movie if you have to go to the bathroom, ads before the movie, and it's usually way to loud.

At least put an author name to your propaganda

It's Chinese. No idea how they publish.

Authorship typically goes to the director, in this case James Mangold. The article did mention him.

What an odd response. Presumably the grandparent post meant the author of the article, which is omitted (as far as I can tell).

The grandparent specifically wanted to know who the authored the propaganda. The article is just about box office scores. It's not something a sane person would regard as propaganda. Hollywood movies however have long served as a core component of American soft power.

I just saw the film and thought it was very good. But yeah its a rarity for me to go to an actual theater these days when I have a giant screen at home.

My local has invested in pretty good seats and sound. And the screen is way bigger than at home, I'm one of those that likes row 5.

But they could focus the projector better on some movies.

And yet in Canada, at least, box office is within striking distance of 2019 revenues. 23Apr01–23Jun25 BO revenue was at 89% of 2019, despite fewer films being released.
