It is even more complex than that. As it already happens, word of mouth can also be hijacked by advertising resulting MLM pyramid schemes. To bring about such a world we need more than just banning advertising, we need to make it a socially repulsive behaviour.

You know, we could just bin the entire sector/activity under dishonesty like we did before puffery was enshrined as an acceptable behavior for a business.
