Quake 1 was the first stereoscopic game I ever played. Back in the late 90's, some local computer store had a 3D rig with glasses that had LCDs in the lenses that would turn the whole lens opaque. On the CRT, the left eye view would render on one refresh while the right lens was blacked out, and then it would alternate. It was such an amazing effect to see on a 120hz screen.
My GeForce 1 could do that out of the box, in 2000. It came with the shutter glasses and could do 3d on a 120hz monitor. It seemed really cool on paper but I only used the gimmick a couple of times. Biggest problem was that the cross hair was right in front of you but baddies weren’t, so you couldn’t focus on both, so then there was not cross hair. For somebody who played mostly with the sniper in UT, that wasn’t fun. Also, the rig hurt the eyes.
