In the war of 1812 the president had to run away from Washington because of the British. His party wanted to sleep in a farm house, the farmer rejected the present. The president and his part left.
That’s just him being a good politician. He chose to be better than the other side and be seen to be better. It’s a trade off, in this case the hearts and minds won.
