I'm sure this happened before COVID, and will happen with other diseases.

A non-disease example: car accidents with drinks happen where it is not the drunk driver's fault. What are these accounts attributed to?


In 2020 it was most likely covid as shown on the death certificate.


I guess my point is: so what? Misattribution happens all the time. It happened before COVID, it will happen afterward.


True, but if its being used to stoke fear and ultimately drive misguided policy then that may be a problem. Were the accidents, where the drunk driver wasn't the cause, juicing the stats to justify a ban on drunk driving?


In the latter case almost certainly yes. US states haven't let up on criminalizing DUI, or making the penalties more severe. No state has rolled back penalties on drink driving.
