IDK what the motivation is here for Iran, but I think humans blew it with pets. We have non native cats destroying sensitive ecosystems, i was just reading about rabies outbreaks in stray dog populations. Theres over population of these pets in general so we kill them. the abusive breeds that exist. If people really cared about taking care of animals we wouldn't have breeders making pure animals for people to have as status symbols. Then people just dump their pets when they get bored of them. Dont bother training them or taking care of them properly.I could go on with the issues pets cause.

theres to many terrible owners and issues pets cause, we really should have some control over these animals. its wild out there.

Without making value judgements, I agree with you. There are definitely a lot of costs associated with owning pets.

Also massive environmental impact. We really should start thinking of banning some of them to combat climate change.

Pretty sure my 6lb toy poodle contributes to climate change significantly less than you do… perhaps we should ban you to combat climate change.

Yet another “I hate this one thing so let’s come up with some ridiculous reason make it illegal” comment. Sheesh.

what is it with this overzealous desire to control what other people do? "some people cant have animals without abusing them? NOBODY CAN HAVE ANIMALS", "some people who are violent use guns to shoot innocent people? NOBODY CAN HAVE GUNS!".

in response, i propose we ban every single commentor on hn, as some clearly cannot behave, there may aswell not be a board at all. Is this ridiculous? if so, why isnt the other insane overreaches?

I wonder it too. There is so many people who want to stop others from eating meat. Or burning coal to produce electricity for their needs... Horrible isn't it.

Your given examples are not the same. The person you replied to is talking about some people misusing something and all people being punished. Your examples, at the very least the coal example, is something that is bad no matter who uses it. It is not a matter of communal punishment for individual use.

how about simply punishing(severely) those who cannot treat animals properly?

Which one of my examples is treating the pet improperly?

"Then people just dump their pets when they get bored of them. Dont bother training them or taking care of them properly"

you could move to iran :^)

why? so we can continue to ignore the externalities of having little fluffy things around? the comment and observation makes you uncomfortable? please tell me why bulldogs should be allowed to exist. its insane what we allow to happen to animals

It's horrendous what breeders have done to the English Bulldog. Two centuries ago they were beautiful healthy working dogs (although unfortunately used for cruel sports). Today they are deformed and unhealthy. Last week I saw someone wheeling two youngish bulldogs along in a cart/pram-like contraption because they were too unhealthy to walk properly.

> Symbols of 'Westernisation'

This a widely used rhetoric used by islamists, and "post-colonialists" in my country (Algeria). No amount of philosophical sophistication will defeat this intellectual tool of terror.

It's such a bullshit excuse, but TBH the real reason is: "we need to show you that we the government still have ultimate power over you, so let us implement this harsh rule that serves no purpose but to show you who is boss".

The country is Iran. Sad to see BBC resorting to clickbait.

The BBC has been rabidly anti-Iran since like 2003, when I first started reading it.

Clickbait means hiding the content of the article from its title.

The title without clickbait would read: In Iran, having a pet could soon land you in jail (bbc.com)

Like, doesn't the headline refer to every country (and without the “soon”, too)? Sure, which pets are problematic is a cultural variable that differs from country to country and within countries over time, but...

Israel has a law proposed (by religious parties) to tax dogs $2500 annually.

Edit: emphasis

Dog owners probably %)

if it’s actually dogs, then they should get a job, pay taxes etc etc

Of course.

Sure, dogs drool (says so right in the Koran) but I thought the prophet liked cats.

The prophet drooled too, when he had his epileptic fits that were thought to be communications with angels.

The Messenger of Allah may have also been doing the same when he entered 9 year old Aisha's tent to consummate their marriage.

What an absolutely horrific and senseless law.

Sadly, as far as iranian horrific and senseless laws, I think this is pretty mild. I am more concerned about women and dissidents.

Of course. It's just yet another to add to the pile.

More Cold War propaganda. Sadly, we are going to see much more of it in the coming years. China, Iran, Russia and whoever supports them are going to be routinely smeared from head to toe by the MSM, of which BBC is one of the most egregiously biased.

But is what the article relates true?

Of course it's true -- it states that something could happen. Therefore, it's true whether or not that happens, that's basic discrete mathematics. But the thought was planted and that is what counts in the end. That's how propaganda works -- I highly recommend the seminal book on the subject: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_(book)

> Police there recently announced that walking dogs in parks was a crime. The ban was justified as a measure to "protect the safety of the public".

Sounds like it’s already happening; that was in the first paragraph of the article. I don’t see how this is an example of propaganda, unless you consider any news reporting in general to be propaganda.

And why would I believe what MSM says on the matter concerning the "enemy" state?

A quick google shows that this particular propagandist item was planted quite a few years ago:

If there are any Iranians on HN, I would be glad if they could share some light on the recent developments, of course.

UPD: More Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/iran/comments/snigug/comment/hw5oqw...

You're right, neither of us can say for sure. I'd also love to hear an Iranian HN users' perspective on the accuracy of the article.

Ah yes, Iran, where its citizens can just freely talk online about their government.
