Any particular reason you're not using the rdiskN (raw) device family, even if you're reading from the disk? I've done plenty of HDD dumps/restores on OS X and macOS over the years, with USB-to-SATA adapters, and so far I haven't caught any problems with neither reliability nor transfer speeds, always maxing out USB2 at roughly 35 MB/sec.



If they'd used rdisk then they'd never have been able to write this article!

It's mentioned at the end as the solution, which of course has been recommended and known to most technical macOS users since forever.
