Pretty sure HN would be upset if an Executive Order related to tech was put out there without input from any tech people, no? Isn't that the original intent of lobbyists and expert opinion? Or is the complaint here about it the COVID-19 part? Or is it just "Trump did it so it's bad"?
This is a straw man argument. The issue isn't the input from meatpackers, the issue is (1) no input from anyone else and (2) the meatpackers exaggerated and lied about the conditions.
My wife currently works for a large meat company, and there were absolutely huge staffing issues the entire time the larger unemployment checks were being sent out.
They had gigantic banners outside the plants with very large sign-on bonuses being advertised for a reason.
Almost everyone working in the plants are immigrants that live in large households. There’s a certain group of immigrants local to the area who all very much adopted wearing masks, but over the course of the pandemic I saw very few of them wearing them correctly.
At least in this producer’s case, I think a large number of the infections probably happened outside of work.
