I think subscriptions to games with overheads (company controlled servers only) are not unreasonable. World of Warcraft and Eve online were early adopters here and did pretty well with new content releases to keep users engaged. I lost interest in a lot of games that basically became 'pay to win'.
Lootboxes, drops etc. are basically gambling, and are even worse if assets are non-saleable or transferrable. There are related real-world scenarios that go way back such as 'booster pack' card games, chewing gum sports cards and toy dispensers.
Part of what makes games great is that all previous state can be disregarded when you start a new game. You can't wipe the board of NFTs. Any game that uses NFTs must die because the incentive to play goes away when the outcome of that game is a foregone conclusion and the only game remaining is one of oblique speculation.
