I used PGSQL on such a performance-intensive project as well as nothing came close while retaining reliability. Had PGSQL devs help me to fine tune some aspects, they're extremely helpful and knowledgeable. And that is NOT something I have found even in commercial companies. I mean by that: i've never had such good help for highly technical issues, ever. And this one was free and fast.
