When I was a student in SoCal, I hardly had to use the windshield defogger. After I moved to Texas near the gulf of Mexico, I had to use the defogger regularly in the winters. I have now moved to Switzerland and the defogger button was very handy, especially when exiting the Gotthard tunnel to the other side of Alps, when the temperature drops down from 20C to negative 5 to negative 10 all of a sudden and everything fogs up. Some buttons really need to be hard-coded and presented to the driver properly for safety reasons. Another interesting omission with my 3 is that the headlight fogs up and then ices over. There is no headlight cleaning / defogging system in this car, I have to pour warm water to make the headlight function properly.
