Doesn't it literally mean "Until we see each other [again]", which is even closer to "See you"?



It does mean exactly that, though not literally (there are only two words in the phrase literally).


Close enough. There are very close matches in Italian ("arrivederci"), French ("au revoir"), Romanian ("la revedere"), but for English these are the closest.
