I've worked on these projects, they still exist but are rare. You'll find most of these projects are in high end defense or other embedded systems projects that are highly, highly connected with building hardware.

Outside of this kind of stuff, software engineering is easier than most other forms of engineering due to an accepted lower bar of quality.
