I'm at the point where I refuse to continue the interviewing process if something like this is required. I have plenty of open source stuff the interviewer can peek at. I'm also happy to discuss any technical question to whatever depth the interviewer wants.

If a take-home assignment is wished, I'm billing for it.

There are plenty of good jobs/projects - be pickier.
