The earth rendering looks funky, my guess is that there is some projection error because everything is too wide (across the equator). Nice post :)

Antarctica looks too large, so I'm guessing that the implemented uv-mapping and the projection used to create that rectangular Earth texture are not the same hence the distortion
p.s. the Earth is also rotating the wrong direction!
