All the truly great tech leads I ever worked with had one characteristic that mattered most of all: they don't panic.

In the face of deployment disasters, team members leaving, management crises or hardware failures they were the rock that everybody turned to for a plan.

I feel like not panicking is partly learned through hard experience and partly a personality trait.

It is however invaluable in bad circumstances: they can save everybodies butt in a bad situation.
