Unfortunately, transportation by truck is one of the least efficient methods possible. Train and barge can transport tens,if not hundreds, of times the cargo for a given amount of fuel. 80% of the thick black pollution they spray out, all that diesel fuel - the fuel they spend idling - is being expended completely stupidly. Exxon and BP like it, and they guided us here - it's time to do something else.
The proportion of cargo moved by truck has increased significantly in the past 40 years, for no good reason. Of course transport by truck is needed for the last leg (into cities). It's not needed to move the majority of the interstate cargo currently being moved this way.
